The Queen of Plastic Surgery
Rhinoplasty ~ The Nose Job
Primary rhinoplasty involves removing excess bone or cartilage, augmenting deficient areas and altering the internal nasal structures, thereby improving the structural support of the nose.
The final changes may be subtle or dramatic, depending on the needs of the patient.
Rhinoplasty can be considered one of the most complex and challenging procedures in cosmetic surgery.
“RHINOPLASTY is one of the defining operations of a Plastic Surgeon.”
Dr Chris Snijman
A rhinoplasty, the queen of plastic surgery, is a very complex operation where the individual steps are continuously optimized on the basis of new insights and techniques.

Reasons for a Rhinoplasty
Deviated Septum:
Rhinoplasty is commonly sought to correct nasal fractures caused by accidents, which can affect both appearance and breathing.
While minor fractures may only need realignment, more severe cases often require surgery to restore both the nose’s look and functionality, improving overall quality of life.
Overall Appearance:
Consulting a rhinoplasty surgeon can help you understand how your nose complements your facial structure. A nose job is a simple and effective way to enhance your overall appearance.
A dorsal hump is a bump on the nose bridge caused by bone or cartilage, often noticeable in profile, and can be reduced with surgery to boost confidence.
Similarly, a bulbous nose tip, which appears too large, is a common reason people seek rhinoplasty.
Restore Breathing:
While many seek rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons, a significant number undergo the surgery to address medical concerns like breathing difficulties.
Common issues include a deviated septum, irregular nasal valves, or turbinate problems, all of which can obstruct airflow, but can be effectively corrected with rhinoplasty to enhance the patient’s quality of life.
Primary Rhinoplasty has two major approaches
OPEN (external approach)
In the Open Rhinoplasty, a very small external incision is made on the columella to open the nose. Most scars resulting from the open rhinoplasty are usually favourable, very rarely conspicuous.
This technique allows the surgeon to visualise most areas of the nose and facilitates the procedure, especially in secondary and difficult cases. This approach gives the surgeon a three-dimensional view of the nose, which helps to reorganise the nasal structures.
CLOSED (internal approach)
In the Closed Rhinoplasty, the nose is approached via an internal incision ( no external visible scars). The surgeon works on the internal nasal structures through this approach.
Rhinoplasty Trends
The trends over the past decade have shifted away from reduction or division of the cartilage framework of the nose to conserving the native anatomy and augmenting deficient areas to restore balance and structural support.
