Rhytidectomy
Facelift
This is facial rejuvenating and NOT facial
altering surgery
Modern day face lifting techniques therefore attempt to address all of the features of facial ageing, namely:
- Skin texture, laxity and discoloration
- Loss of volume in the temple, periocular and mid facial regions
- Tightening and repositioning of the underlying structures in the correct position
- Vertical redraping of the skin and removal of the excess
- Simultaneous correction of the neck, eyes and brow region if required
- Post operative maintanance of the skin and lifestyle modification
Over the past decade there has been a paradigm shift in the way that we view facial ageing.
The old face lifting techniques that relied on pulling the skin backwards, over a deflated facial skeleton, as tight as we could, no longer apply (THE WINDSWEPT LOOK).
We have come to understand that the face loses volume first, followed by a vertical descent of the skin and the underlying supportive structures.

GENERAL GUIDELINES
What the surgery entails:
- 5The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia
- 5It’s usually combined with upper or lower eyelid surgery for comprehensive periocular rejuvenation
- 5The incisions are placed within the hairline in line with the outer part of the eyebrow and measure 4cm in length
- 5The skin of the forehead and eyebrow is elevated and checked for mobility
- 5The eyebrow is then elevated to the desired position and the excess skin is removed
- 5The wounds are inspected for bleeding and closed with a buried suture technique
- 5Local antibiotic solution is then applied to the incisions
- 5A cooling mask is then applied to the forehead.
The Recovery Phase
- This surgery is essentially painless and discomfort is easily managed with oral analgesics
- The self cooling mask should be used liberally as described in the provided instruction leaflet
- Try to sleep with your head up for the first evening
- The drains will be removed the next day and the skin will be cleansed by Dr Snijman
- Gentle hair wash and local antibiotic cream to the incision sites
- The wounds will be inspected at 1 week and application of the post operative creams will begin
- A light chemical peel and face mask will be applied at 2 weeks
- Return to normal social activities by 10-14 days
- Skin changes will become apparent from 3 weeks with a change in colour, texture and pore size
- Swelling and discoloration will subside by 10-14 days
